Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of the legendary science-fiction novel ‘Dune’ by Frank Herbert continues and promises a second half that takes no prisoners – bigger set pieces, more action sequences and an even larger assembly of acclaimed actors and actresses. Picking up right where part one left off, the viewer is catapulted back onto Arrakis, the desert planet. After the extermination of his house, Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) is caught between prophecy, political intrigues and big worms. Among other themes it explores how deep seeded religious believes can shape entire cultures.
Beyond the all-star cast it is the cinematography, sound design and score by Hans Zimmer that create an audiovisual flood which engulfs and almost drowns the audience in an excitement for cinema I last felt watching “Dune: Part One“. When talking sci-fi epics “Dune: Part Two“ appears as a revelation, a masterfully crafted piece of cinema on virtually every front and – in my eyes – an absolute must-watch on the big screen for anyone who likes a more sophisticated blockbuster.
