After losing his job, a once-ordinary man watches his life slowly unravel as debt grows and opportunities disappear. Desperate to reclaim the position he believes was stolen from him, he begins eliminating his competitors in the paper industry.
Legendary South Korean director Park Chan-wook (“Oldboy”, “The Handmaiden”) takes this simple premise and turns it into something extraordinary. With his unique style, Park Chan-wook crafts a dark, razor-sharp thriller about desperation, ambition, and the terrifying logic of a man who convinces himself he truly has no other choice. Carried by the terrific acting of Lee Byung-hun (“I Saw The Devil”, “Squid Game”), the film becomes a sociocritical satire which has both dark and comedic tones. Themes such as class struggle have been very prominent in South Korean cinema and if you like „Parasite“, movies by Park Chan-wook or South Korean cinema in general, you shouldn’t miss out on “No Other Choice” – a memorable contribution to the countries cinematic legacy.
The thematic comparison to “Parasite” is obvious. But is it also as good? Find out for yourself! (SiL)
