“Babylon” tells a story set in and revolving around Hollywood starting in the late 1920s, in the midst of the transition from silent to sound film. Here we follow the aspiring actress Nellie LaRoy (Margot Robbie), acting legend Jack Conrad (Brad Pitt) and the ambitious Manny Torres (Diego Calva) on their many drug filled escapades through early 20th century LA, including all manner of graphic depictions of substance abuse and sexual content.
Accompanied by an enchanting jazzy score that is all too typical of a Damien Chazelle (“La La Land”, “Whiplash”) picture, the movie takes the audience on a trip through film history and does not miss the chance to critique the industry itself whilst at the same time indulging in the numerous wonders the medium of motion picture provides.
Although it does take its time, which may be to its own detriment, the stunning cinematography in combination with Justin Hurwitz’s score and the fabulous performances from the star-filled cast make this movie a very interesting and unique experience.
