Feeling stuck, left alone and forgotten. Those emotions can be quite relatable for students everywhere. In “Sorry, Baby”, we follow Agnes (Eva Victor), a literature student, after a “bad thing” happened to her a few years ago. While the people around her seem to get ahead in life, like her best friend Lydie who’s pregnant and about to get married, Agnes lives in rural Maine and struggles to move on. Told in non-linear chapters that jump back and forth in time, the film slowly pieces together for us who Agnes is and what happened to her.
The rest of the film is better kept as a surprise to hit you at your most emotionally open. Come prepared for deep feelings, but also for genuine entertainment. In their directorial debut, Eva Victor manages to combine powerful emotion with hilarious, relatable humor. Only few films (Eight Grade, Jojo Rabbit, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, …) manage this balance so successfully. “Sorry, Baby” has been nominated for its direction and writing at numerous festivals and awards, including Sundance and Cannes, and Eva Victor’s performance earned a Golden Globe nomination.
