Families can be complicated. After the death of their mother, sisters Nora and Agnes have to reconcile with their estranged father Gustav, a celebrated film director in the final years of his career. Having been separated from the family for many years, Gustav still owns the family home and now the three must discuss its future together. However, Gustav’s focus isn’t on the house but instead of his newest film project, a drama based on his own mother’s life for which he wants his daughter to star in. Nora refuses. Working with her father is emotionally not possible for her. The project eventually moves forward when famous Hollywood actress Rachel Kemp discovers Gustav’s work at a festival retrospective and agrees to take on the role.

Sentimental Value marks the third collaboration between director Joachim Trier and actress Renate Reinsve. Adding a sense of wholesomeness and optimism compared to their previous work “The Worst Person in the World”, Joachim Triers film managed to get 9 nominations at this years Academy Awards, including nominations for all 4 leading actors. Sentimental Value is one of the most acclaimed European films in recent history. (SP)
