Moscow, 1953: While Stalin is enjoying the sounds of a Mozart concerto, which has been repeated and recorded for his amusement, and is excessively amused by another hate message to him, he suffers a stroke and is only discovered the following morning. Following the news of Stalin’s poor health, the members of the Central Committee of the CPSU are more concerned about his succession than his health. Secret service chief Lavrenti Beria (Simon Russell Beale) tries to win back the people’s favor by suspending the executions on Stalin’s orders. Stalin’s deputy Georgi Malenkov (Jeffrey Tambor), meanwhile, overwhelmed by the situation, simply follows the suggestions of the other members of the Central Committee. Nikita Khrushchev (Steve Buscemi), on the other hand, is worried about the development of events and tries to do everything „right,“ which is often hilarious, but at other times tough as nails.
Armando Iannucci knows how to make fun of the lunacy of the political establishment and proves this with the award-winning series „Veep,“ among others. „The Death of Stalin“ shows the absurdity of a very dark era with its great actors and a lot of humor, which makes you laugh as much as you think.
The movie will be screened open-air at the Schülerfreizeitzentrum with free admission!
