If you´ve spent any time during the last years around the spookier corners of the internet, you know the words above and the image associated with them. The Backrooms are not just an urban legend, they´ve grown into an online phenomenon comparable to Slender Man or the SCP Foundation during their prime. Kane Parson, only 21 years old, has played a vital role in exposing an audience of millions to these liminal horrors, but also in shaping an integral part of their lore with his YouTube short films. Still, it´s a surprise that a Hollywood studio – even one as experimental as A24 – just decided to put their trust into this kid and let him direct an actual movie. I am glad to report that this wager paid out. With the help of an extensive set build and a lot of practical effects, Parson used his budget of under 10 million Dollars to turn the infamous yellow maze into a haunting reality. (SaL)
