SUMMARY:A Different Man (OmU)
DESCRIPTION:„A Different Man“ tells the story of Edward (Sebastian Stan)\, a shy\, isolated actor who suffers from neurofibromatosis and withdraws further and further from the world due to his disfigured facial features. A risky treatment radically changes his appearance and he begins a new life as the self-confident estate agent „Guy“. However\, when he meets his former neighbour Ingrid (Renate Reinsve) again and is confronted with his old identity in a theatre project\, it becomes clear that a new face does not automatically mean a new self. \n„A Different Man“ is an acerbic\, grotesque comedy with a slight body horror flavour. Aaron Schimberg cleverly plays with themes such as self-perception\, superficiality and social ideals of beauty. The first half of the film is particularly strong\, with absurd humour and melancholy moments. The acting ensemble – above all Sebastian Stan and Adam Pearson – is also convincing across the board. The magnificent make-up work makes for intense visual moments. Only the finale lays the message on a little too thick\, but without detracting from the film’s overall impact. An intelligent\, uncomfortably funny commentary on our obsession with appearances. SUMMARY:The Wild Robot (OmU)
DESCRIPTION:After getting shipwrecked\, a robot – ROZZUM 7134\, or „Roz“ for short – is stranded on an uninhabited island and must learn to adapt to the harsh environment. This is easier said than done\, as the island´s animal inhabitants are downright afraid of the blinking and noisy figure that only wants to help. But that changes when a series of mishaps brings Roz into contact with a newly hatched gosling\, which promptly imprints itself onto her as a mother figure. From now on\, it´s the robot’s job to prepare the little goose for the annual bird migration before winter descends on the island. \nIn their new movie DreamWorks use their 3D animation style with a brushstroke look not to depict a fantasy world\, but to render untamed nature in all its beauty. The use of light is particularly impressive here\, be it soft rays falling through the treetops or the expressive light patterns on Roz’s mechanical body. What I personally like most about this movie is how much it surprised me. Animated films tend to follow established patterns\, but “Wild Robot” has several moments where it outright breaks those rules. This makes the film feel more mature than many of his contemporaries and provides a consistently interesting development of the main characters\, as well as the opportunity for an incredibly touching story. DESCRIPTION:Anlässlich der 50ten Jazztage in Ilmenau präsentieren wir in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Jazzclub e.V. Ilmenau den Dokumentarfilm „Jazz on a Summer’s Day“ im Helmholtz-Hörsaal der TU Ilmenau. \n„Jazz on a Summer’s Day“ ist die Chronologie eines Sommertags voller Musik\, Sinnlichkeit\, Eleganz und Lässigkeit. Der Schauplatz Newport trägt einen historischen Status als gesellschaftliche Sommerresidenz der USA\, darüber hinaus wurde die Stadt in nur vier Jahren zur Jazz-Hauptstadt der Welt. Bert Stern fängt Newports Zauber ein\, indem er seine Kamera am Strand bummeln und durch die malerischen Straßen mit ihren weißen Häusern und Pensionen streifen lässt. \nNatürlich steht neben den idyllischen Landschaftsaufnahmen vor allem die Musik im Mittelpunkt. Präsentiert werden einige der größten Künstler ihrer Zeit auf der Bühne des Newport Jazz Festivals 1958. Unter anderem Legenden wie Louis Armstrong\, Thelonious Monk\, Anita O’Day\, Dinah Washington und Mahalia Jackson\, die mit ihren einzigartigen Interpretationen von Swing\, Bebop\, Blues und Gospel das Publikum begeisterten. Ein Muss für Jazzliebhaber und alle\, die einen sinnlich-eleganten Musikfilm genießen wollen. \nGezeigt wird die 2019 restaurierte Fassung des Originalfilms von 1959\, der anlässlich des 60 jährigen Jubiläums des Films digital überarbeitet wurde. SUMMARY:The True Cost (OmU)
DESCRIPTION:“The True Cost” sheds light on the dark side of the global fashion industry\, especially the fast fashion business. The film shows how cheap production in developing countries such as Bangladesh\, India\, Cambodia and China lead to poor working conditions\, low wages and massive environmental destruction. Among other things\, the film focuses on the collapse of the Rana Plaza factory in Bangladesh\, which illustrates the catastrophic conditions in textile factories. \nThe film makes it significant how increasing consumption in Western countries is fueled by the media and leads to an explosion in clothing production worldwide\, while at the same time textile waste and environmental pollution increase drastically. \n“The True Cost” presents economic\, ecological and social grievances of the fashion industry and gives a voice to both supporters and critics of the system\, including activists\, scientists and representatives of fair fashion companies.
