Perfekter?“ \nElisabeth Sparkle\, eine gefallene Hollywood-Größe\, sieht ihre glitzernde Welt aus den Fugen geraten\, als ihr Produzent ihre Aerobic-Show abbricht\, und ihr mitteilt\, dass es Zeit für ein neueres\, attraktiveres Gesicht vor den Kameras sei. An diesem Tiefpunkt ihrer Karriere kommt Elisabeth mit THE SUBSTANCE in Kontakt\, ein wundersames Serum\, das ihr eine verbesserte Version ihrer selbst verspricht. Der einzige Haken: ihre Zeit muss fair geteilt werden. Ohne Ausnahme. \nZwischen Sets die direkt aus „The Shining“ herausgefallen zu sein scheinen\, beleuchtet  Regisseurin Coralie Fargeat zum einen den sexistische Alterswahn der Filmindustrie\, und zeigt gleichzeitig an einem extremen Beispiel wie weit Menschen bereit sind für ein kleines bisschen mehr Zeit im Scheinwerferlicht zu gehen. Demi Moore und Margaret Qualley\, die sich die Hauptrolle teilen\, liefern beide eine großartig und zwischen all dem Irrsinn trotzdem immer wieder berührende Performance. Zwar glänzt THE SUBSTANCE mit herrlich absurd-bösem Humor\, aber das hier ist trotzdem ein waschechter Horrorfilm. Von heftigem Gore\, über schmierige Ekelszenen bis zu Bodyhorror a la „The Thing“ werden empfindliche Mägen auf eine harte Probe gestellt. In 1965\, he finally caused a scandal when he performed at the Newport Folk Festival with an electric guitar\, defying the expectations of the scene. \nWith “A Complete Unknown”\, James Mangold directs a solid biopic about Bob Dylan\, which is told in a more conventional way than Todd Haynes‘ experimental “I’m Not There”\, but impresses with strong acting performances and intense music scenes. Timothée Chalamet in particular shines as Dylan\, capturing his charisma and stage presence without fully unraveling the well kept mystery of his personality. The film’s best moments come when Mangold lets the music speak for itself\, especially in the live recordings\, which lend the film a raw\, authentic atmosphere. SUMMARY:Mickey 17 (OmU)
DESCRIPTION:It‘s the year 2054. Mickey Barnes (Robert Pattinson) and his friend Timo (Steven Yeun) sign up as crew for a spaceship leaving Earth to colonize the planet Niflheim. Mickey becomes an „Expendable“\, an Earth-banned technology\, used to clone Mickey and restore his memories when he dies. Therefore he‘s given various lethal assignments and every time he dies\, another version of him is printed out. Everything goes according to plan until the 17th iteration of Mickey is presumed dead after an assignment. Mickey 18 emerges\, but Mickey 17 is still alive and comes back to the ship. Now that there are two Mickeys\, they count as “Multiples” which becomes a problem because the expedition’s leader\, Kenneth Marshall (Mark Ruffalo)\, has vowed to kill any existing Multiples. \n“Mickey 17” by Bong Joon-ho (“Parasite”) is a dark\, comedic sci-fi film that is based on the novel “Mickey7” by Edward Ashton. With it\, Joon-ho gives us another creative and unpredictable story that strongly criticizes capitalism and society itself. Standing out once again is Robert Pattinson showing off his range as various Mickey’s\, especially when Mickey 17 and 18 coexist as two very similar but also very different versions of one person. Absurd dark humor and satire\, mixed into a sci-fi story lead to a film that is really worth seeing\, especially when you enjoyed Joon-ho’s previous films. DESCRIPTION:“The True Cost” sheds light on the dark side of the global fashion industry\, especially the fast fashion business. The film shows how cheap production in developing countries such as Bangladesh\, India\, Cambodia and China lead to poor working conditions\, low wages and massive environmental destruction. Among other things\, the film focuses on the collapse of the Rana Plaza factory in Bangladesh\, which illustrates the catastrophic conditions in textile factories. \nThe film makes it significant how increasing consumption in Western countries is fueled by the media and leads to an explosion in clothing production worldwide\, while at the same time textile waste and environmental pollution increase drastically. \n“The True Cost” presents economic\, ecological and social grievances of the fashion industry and gives a voice to both supporters and critics of the system\, including activists\, scientists and representatives of fair fashion companies. DESCRIPTION:Anlässlich der 50ten Jazztage in Ilmenau präsentieren wir in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Jazzclub e.V. Ilmenau den Dokumentarfilm „Jazz on a Summer’s Day“ im Helmholtz-Hörsaal der TU Ilmenau. \n„Jazz on a Summer’s Day“ ist die Chronologie eines Sommertags voller Musik\, Sinnlichkeit\, Eleganz und Lässigkeit. Der Schauplatz Newport trägt einen historischen Status als gesellschaftliche Sommerresidenz der USA\, darüber hinaus wurde die Stadt in nur vier Jahren zur Jazz-Hauptstadt der Welt. Bert Stern fängt Newports Zauber ein\, indem er seine Kamera am Strand bummeln und durch die malerischen Straßen mit ihren weißen Häusern und Pensionen streifen lässt. \nNatürlich steht neben den idyllischen Landschaftsaufnahmen vor allem die Musik im Mittelpunkt. Präsentiert werden einige der größten Künstler ihrer Zeit auf der Bühne des Newport Jazz Festivals 1958. Unter anderem Legenden wie Louis Armstrong\, Thelonious Monk\, Anita O’Day\, Dinah Washington und Mahalia Jackson\, die mit ihren einzigartigen Interpretationen von Swing\, Bebop\, Blues und Gospel das Publikum begeisterten. SUMMARY:The Wild Robot (OmU)
DESCRIPTION:After getting shipwrecked\, a robot – ROZZUM 7134\, or „Roz“ for short – is stranded on an uninhabited island and must learn to adapt to the harsh environment. This is easier said than done\, as the island´s animal inhabitants are downright afraid of the blinking and noisy figure that only wants to help. But that changes when a series of mishaps brings Roz into contact with a newly hatched gosling\, which promptly imprints itself onto her as a mother figure. From now on\, it´s the robot’s job to prepare the little goose for the annual bird migration before winter descends on the island. \nIn their new movie DreamWorks use their 3D animation style with a brushstroke look not to depict a fantasy world\, but to render untamed nature in all its beauty. The use of light is particularly impressive here\, be it soft rays falling through the treetops or the expressive light patterns on Roz’s mechanical body. What I personally like most about this movie is how much it surprised me. Animated films tend to follow established patterns\, but “Wild Robot” has several moments where it outright breaks those rules. This makes the film feel more mature than many of his contemporaries and provides a consistently interesting development of the main characters\, as well as the opportunity for an incredibly touching story. DESCRIPTION:„A Different Man“ tells the story of Edward (Sebastian Stan)\, a shy\, isolated actor who suffers from neurofibromatosis and withdraws further and further from the world due to his disfigured facial features. A risky treatment radically changes his appearance and he begins a new life as the self-confident estate agent „Guy“. However\, when he meets his former neighbour Ingrid (Renate Reinsve) again and is confronted with his old identity in a theatre project\, it becomes clear that a new face does not automatically mean a new self. \n„A Different Man“ is an acerbic\, grotesque comedy with a slight body horror flavour. Aaron Schimberg cleverly plays with themes such as self-perception\, superficiality and social ideals of beauty. The first half of the film is particularly strong\, with absurd humour and melancholy moments. The acting ensemble – above all Sebastian Stan and Adam Pearson – is also convincing across the board. The magnificent make-up work makes for intense visual moments. Only the finale lays the message on a little too thick\, but without detracting from the film’s overall impact. An intelligent\, uncomfortably funny commentary on our obsession with appearances. DESCRIPTION:Die traditionelle Kurzfilmnacht geht in die nächste Runde! Der Hochschulfilmclub möchte mit der Kurzfilmnacht Euch und das vergangene Semester gebührend verabschieden und vor den anstehenden Prüfungen noch ein wenig Ablenkung bieten. \nEuch erwarten originelle internationale Kurzfilme\, die in drei Abschnitten á 45 Minuten präsentiert werden. Das Programm unterscheidet sich natürlich von den Kurzfilmnächten im letzten Winter- und Sommersemester. \nOb Romantik\, Drama\, Horror\, flacher oder schwarzer Humor – jeder kommt auf seine Kosten und niemand zu kurz. \nAlle Kurzfilme werden in ihrem Originalton gezeigt\, in der Regel mit Untertiteln. So sind auch alle nicht-deutschsprachigen Filmliebhaber willkommen. \nAll short films will be screened in their original version\, usually with subtitles. SUMMARY:Bei den Kaffeepflückern in Brasilien
DESCRIPTION:Das thüringische Dorf Böhlen liegt im Schiefergebirge\, nicht weit von Ilmenau\, und war einst Heimat vieler Leineweber. Doch als im Zuge der Industrialisierung industrielle Weberei die Handarbeit ersetzte\, verloren sie in kurzer Zeit ihre Lebensgrundlage. Vor dem Hintergrund dieses Strukturwandels trug sich eine Geschichte zu\, die bis vor kurzem in der Gegend von Böhlen als die „Brasiliensache“ nur äußerst schemenhaft bekannt war: 154 Böhlener wurden im Jahr 1852 nach Brasilien deportiert. Denn hier wurden händeringend Arbeitskräfte gesucht. Doch was es genau mit der Geschichte auf sich hatte\, darüber kursierten nur vage Gerüchte. Bis vor einigen Jahren zwei Heimatforscher in Kontakt mit einem brasilianischen Nachfahren ehemaliger Böhlener kamen. Gemeinsam gingen sie der Geschichte auf dem Grund. Dabei entdeckten sie eine Gemeinschaft von Nachkommen der Thüringer in Brasilien\, die teilweise neben Portugiesisch bis heute noch Deutsch mit Thüringer Dialekt sprechen. Eine Sprache\, die sich in der neuen Heimat über sechs und mehr Generationen und mehr als 150 Jahre überlieferte. Nach mehr als 20-jähriger Recherche konnten die beiden Böhlener Heimatforscher Dieter Lange und Hans-Günter Schneider eine dramatische Geschichte und ihre Folgen rekonstruieren. Ihre Arbeit wurde zur Grundlage dieses Dokumentarfilmes\, der im brasilianischen Bundesstaat Santa Catarina und in Thüringen gedreht wurde.\nDieser Film wird im Helmholtz-Hörsaal anlässlich der Eröffnung einer Ausstellung in der Unibibliothek gezeigt. Im Anschluss an die Vorführung findet ein Filmgespräch mit Regisseur Gerald Backhaus statt. Though Adam is hesitant at first\, the two develop a special bond.\nAs past troubles slowly surface between Adam and both his father and mother\, the relationship with Harry intensifies. Can their love heal old wounds? \nWhen thinking back\, the ending immediately comes to mind – but of course I cannot talk about that here. Moreover\, the performances of the two lead actors as well as the work of the supporting cast (namely Adam‘s parents) are truly memorable. DESCRIPTION:Small-town loner Lou is currently working as a gym manager\, a job where she’s wasting away\, unclogging toilets and slipping steroids to bulked-up juicers. That suddenly changes when a new customer walks in and hits her like a lightning strike of love: Jackie\, an ambitious bodybuilder headed through town to Vegas in pursuit of her dream. But their love ignites violence\, as there´s also Lou´s family\, especially her estranged father\, who´s shadowy influence begins to pull both women into a web of crime… \nLet me get this out at the start: this movie is a love story\, but one that wades through a ditch filled with blood and muck. Seldom have I seen a movie with such a raw\, grimy feel to it. From steamy sex scenes to viscerally brutal violence (sometimes bordering on body horror) this movie has everything. And still\, I found myself gleefully entertained the whole way through. A big part of this is the excellent acting\, both from Kristen Stewart\, who has already proven her talent for playing troublesome personas\, as well as her co-stars Katy O´Brian and Ed Harris. The other part is an electrifying narrative that never lets up\, as director Rose Glass creates a slow-motion human car crash made of bad decisions\, atrocious haircuts and forbidden love that I would recommend to anyone who can stomach the blood. DESCRIPTION:Auch dieses Jahr zeigt der Hochschulfilmclub zusammen mit dem Fachgebiet Kunststofftechnik\, dem Fachschaftsrat Maschinenbau\, dem Studierendenrat und dem FKTI den Kultstreifen „Die Feuerzangenbowle“ in der schönen Vorweihnachtszeit.\nJeder Student kennt die Geschichte des legendären Dr. Johannes Pfeiffer (nur echt mit drei f)\, der noch einmal die Schulbank drückt. In angeheiterter Herrenrunde bei Feuerzangenbowle erzählen sich die Honoratioren von ihren Schulstreichen. Der junge Schriftsteller Pfeiffer wurde als Kind „nur“ von einem Privatlehrer unterrichtet und kann demnach bei diesen Geschichten nicht mithalten. So beschließt er eine Rückkehr an die Schule – und zwar als Schüler. Als Primaner getarnt erlebt er alles\, was zu einer richtigen Schülerkarriere gehört. Angefangen bei unzähligen Klassenbucheinträgen\, über eine schwatzhafte Zimmerwirtin\, gnadenlos bimmelnde Wecker zu unmöglichen Uhrzeiten und einsame Zeiten im Karzer bis hin zur Schülerliebe mit dem Namen Eva. \nDamit ihr dabei nicht verdursten müsst\, gibt es natürlich wieder passend zum Film echte Feuerzangenbowle. \nAber: „Jeder nor einen wönzigen Schlock“! Dort angekommen\, müssen sie schnell feststellen\, dass sie trotz ihrer Erfolge im mittleren Westen in der Metropole keine Narrenfreiheit genießen.\nGerade als unsere Ghostbusters eine mysteriöse Kugel erhalten\, muss Phoebe (Grace) sich mit den Problemen des Erwachsenwerdens beschäftigen. Die Kugel diente lange als Gefängnis für eine mesopotamische Gottheit mit Frostkräften. Doch das Gefängnis beginnt zu bröckeln…\nGil Kenans Fortsetzung der Ghostbusters-Reihe ist wie alle bisherigen Filme abenteuerliches Popcorn-Kino. Wer die Dynamik und Modernisierungen des Vorgängerfilms mochte wird auch hier gut unterhalten sein. Die Comedy und One-Liner-Frequenz liegt extrem hoch und wirkt auf einige Zuschauer vielleicht etwas zu übertrieben\, dafür muss auch niemand Angst vor zu großem Horror haben. Die Familienfreundlichkeit des letzten Teils wird auch hier fortgesetzt und mit noch mehr Nostalgie und Cameos ergänzt. There is the story of a husband mourning his missing wife; but after her return\, she seems to have changed in a very weird way\, challenging their relationship. And finally there is the story of an ambitious woman searching for someone who can reanimate the dead as a new member for her religious cult.\n“Kinds of Kindness“ can only be described as a very weird movie which might not hook every audience at first. SUMMARY:The Fall Guy
DESCRIPTION:Nachdem sich der erfahrene Stuntman Colt Seavers nach einer schweren Rückenverletzung anderthalb Jahre aus dem Stuntgewerbe zurückzog\, bekommt er von der Filmproduzentin Gail das Angebot im Film „Metalstorm“\, dem Regiedebüt seiner ehemaligen Flamme Jody\, wieder in die Filmbranche zurückzukehren. Diese ist anfangs wenig begeistert\, da sich Colt seit seinem Unfall nicht bei ihr gemeldet hat\, akzeptiert jedoch sein Engagement und nutzt Gespräche über den Film um ihm subtil zu signalisieren\, wie verletzt sie durch seine Handlungen war. Colt zeigt sich reumütig und schon bald beginnen alte Gefühle bei beiden hochzukommen. Jedoch verschwindet der vermeintliche Hauptdarsteller Tom Ryder spurlos und Gail beauftragt Colt diesen ausfindig zu machen\, um Jodys Filmdebüt zu retten.\nDiese lose Filmadaption der Fernsehserie „Ein Colt für alle Fälle“ ist eine Ode an die Stuntarbeit und David Leitch (bekannt durch Filme wie „John Wick“ und „Bullet Train“) beweist damit\, wie wichtig reale Stunts im Vormarsch digitaler Effekte immer noch sind. Neben den zahlreichen Actionszenen liefert der Film außerdem eine sehr humoristische Lovestory\, welche hervorragend von der Chemie der beiden Hauptdarsteller profitiert. Die daraus entstehenden Spannungen in der Gegenwart führen die drei zu ihrer geteilten Vergangenheit zurück\, in der Sport und Liebe nicht weit voneinander entfernt lagen. \nBei „Challengers“ handelt es sich um einen sehr sinnlichen und von sexuellen Spannungen geradezu überquellenden Film. Unterstützt von einem intensiven und einzigartigen Soundtrack wird die Entwicklung eines Liebesdreiecks über die Jahre hinweg erzählt. DESCRIPTION:A few years have passed since the first “Inside Out” movie: Riley\, now a teenager\, is heading for a summer hockey camp\, when the puberty alarm in headquarters goes off and the emotions in her head are suddenly facing a swift demolition to make room for something entirely unexpected: new Emotions. Joy\, Sadness\, Anger\, Fear and Disgust\, who have long been running a rather successful operation\, aren’t sure how to feel when Anxiety shows up. And it looks like she’s not the only newcomer about to plunge Riley’s mind into chaos. \nIn a sea of animated sequels that often feel like corporate attempts to milk people’s nostalgia without adding much to an existing IP (Hello Lightyear!)\, “Inside Out 2” is a rare example of a movie that actually helps to build upon an existing story. While the first film shows how a child would deal with a difficult situation in their life\, this film is all about the big and small roadblocks that may throw a teenager into an existential crisis. The change of director from Pixar veteran Pete Docter to Kelsey Mann does little to detract from this continuity. Not only are the lessons from the original “Inside Out” heeded\, but the story here is told as empathetic as that of its predecessor\, with at least one statement that will haunt your mind for a good while.
