SUMMARY:The Woman King (OmU)
DESCRIPTION:Set in 1823\, this movie tells the story of the all-women forces of the West African kingdom of Dahomey known as the Agojie. When faced with a threat by the Oyo Empire\, General Nanisca (Viola Davis) must train a new generation of warriors to protect the kingdom. The newly instituted King Ghezo (John Boyega) must also deal with Portuguese slavers who have joined forces with the Oyo Empire. \nThe movie is based on true events and the Agojie serve as the real-life inspiration for the now more famous fictional Dora Milaje\, the all-female kings-guard warriors of “Black Panther” (2018). DESCRIPTION:The Viking Age. With a mind aflame with hate and revenge\, Prince Amleth\, the wronged son of King Aurvandill\, heads to cold\, windswept Iceland to retrieve what was stolen from him: a father\, a mother\, and a kingdom. He embarks on a murderous quest to find the hateful adversary\, whose life is forever woven together with his by the threads of fate… \nFirst of all a little warning: if you go into this movie expecting a classic Viking-epic\, full of bloody battles\, breathtaking landscapes and brave warriors\, you will be disappointed. Because this is not the kind of story director Robert Eggers wants to tell. Instead\, the “The Northman” adapts the Legend of Amleth\, a Scandinavian folk tale that inspired William Shakespeare to write his famous tragedy of (almost) the same name. The story is less concerned with telling events in a realistic way and more with invoking specific emotions or atmosphere. This makes portions of the movie more akin to a fever dream\, but also creates an quite moody and unique experience. SUMMARY:Die Geschichte der Menscheit: leicht gekürzt
DESCRIPTION:Der NASA-Wissenschaftler Gerhard Friedle und sein Team schicken 1977 mit der Raumsonde Voyager die Golden Record ins All\, auf der das gesammelte Wissen der Menschheit enthalten ist. Die Raumsonde mit der Schallplatte wird von Außerirdischen im Jahr 2050 aufgefunden. Daraufhin präsentiert Friedle vor den drei Aliens in Form einer Video-Botschaft\, die auf der Platte abgespeichert ist\, eine episodenhafte Nacherzählung der Geschichte der Menschheit (vom Urknall bis zur Gegenwart)\, die sich hierbei jedoch ganz anders ereignet hat\, als es bisher in den Geschichtsbüchern zu finden war. Die Außerirdischen sind über das offensichtlich idiotische Verhalten der Menschen erstaunt und beschließen\, zu verhindern\, dass die Menschheit die Erde jemals verlassen kann\, „um dem Rest des Universums das Chaos und Leid zu ersparen“. \nMit Star-Besetzung aus der deutschen Comedy-Szene führt „Die Geschichte der Menschheit – leicht gekürzt“ das fort\, was in der ZDF-Comedyserie „Sketch History“ begonnen wurde: Durchgeknallte und skurrile Charaktere in fragwürdigen historischen Szenarien. SUMMARY:Parallele Mütter
DESCRIPTION:Almodóvar lässt in seinem Film Freundschaft\, Familie und historisches Erbe Hand in Hand gehen.\nFotografin Janis hat eine Affäre mit dem Anthropologen Arturo\, aus welcher ein Kind entsteht. Auf der Entbindungsstation lernt Janis die 17-jährige Ana kennen\, sie freunden sich an\, bis sie gleichzeitig entbinden\, Nummern austauschen und mit ihren Kindern ihre Wege gehen. Beide allein.\nDabei wird die historische Parallele zu alleinerziehenden Müttern während der Franco-Ära gezogen\, in der viele Männer aus ihren Familien gerissen\, verschleppt und getötet wurden. Auch Janis beschäftigt sich diesbezüglich mit ihrer Familiengeschichte und bittet Arturo das Massengrab\, in der ihr Großvater liegt\, auszuheben\, um ihnen eine würdevolle Bestattung zu ermöglichen.\nAlmodóvar zeigt aber auch die wechselhafte Freundschaft zwischen Janis und Ana\, die aufgrund einschneidender Ereignisse verschiedenste Wandlungen durchmacht. \nDer Film verwebt mühelos alltägliche Probleme mit spanischer Geschichte und baut dieser so ein Mahnmal. Auch wenn angemerkt werden kann\, dass die Szenen zu perfekt wirken\, lassen sich die Emotionen der Figuren durch brillantes Schauspiel stehts nachvollziehen und mitfühlen. SUMMARY:Der Schneeleopard
DESCRIPTION:Der Naturfotograf Vincent Munier und der Schriftsteller Sylvain Tesson begeben sich in Tibet auf die Suche nach einem ganz besonderen und sehr seltenen Tier: dem Schneeleoparden. Im zentralasiatischen Hochgebirge lebend\, ist nicht nur die Reise für die Forscher eine Herausforderung\, sondern auch die geringe Anzahl und Scheu der Großkatzen. Auf ständiger Spurensuche und mit dem Finger auf dem Kameraauslöser entstehen wundervolle und beeindruckende Bilder\, die den Zuschauer in eine andere Welt entführen. Dabei liegt der Fokus nicht einzig und allein auf dem Schneeleoparden selbst\, sondern auf dem ganzen Lebensraum Himalaya\, von den Tieren über die Pflanzen bis hin zu den Menschen – und gibt vielleicht einen Grund mehr\, sich um die Erhaltung dessen zu bemühen. \nDas ganze Erlebnis wurde anschließend auch in einen Roman und ein Fotobuch verarbeitet. SUMMARY:The Batman (OmU)
DESCRIPTION:THE BATMAN is the latest movie about the Dark Knight. Robert Pattinson portrays the World’s Greatest Detective and fits surprisingly well into the\, after Joker\, again very dark mood of this iteration of superhero movies by DC. Going back to his roots Batman slips into a more human-like persona and is faced with a serial killer case. He helps the local police by solving riddles with clues left behind at the crime scenes. Assisted by old and new allies\, this eventually leads him closer to his own history than he would have liked initially\, yet he must capture the perpetrator and bring justice to the by corruption overflooded Gotham. \nEspecially the first half of THE BATMAN is really captivating and far from the typical superhero storyline we all have seen a hundred times already. The underlaying tension is always noticeable and makes the movie much less mainstream and more alternative\, but still great. DESCRIPTION:Von Paul Schrader und seinen Figuren sind wir schon einiges gewohnt. Der Regisseur von „Taxi Driver“ lässt uns in seinem neuen Film wieder in das Leben eines Gequälten eintauchen. William\, Ex-Soldat\, verbringt jeden Tag gleich. Er geht ins Casino\, spielt Blackjack mit kleinen Einsätzen\, bleibt unauffällig\, zählt Karten und geht mit einem kleinen\, aber sicheren Gewinn nach Hause. Im Casino sagt ihm niemand\, was er tun muss oder fragt ihn nach seiner Vergangenheit. Denn genau mit dieser versucht er umzugehen. Doch auf begabte Spieler wird man aufmerksam\, so auch La Linda\, die William überredet an Pokerturnieren teilzunehmen. So beginnen sie eine Reise durch die Casinos der USA. Auf ihrem Weg treffen sie auf Cirk\, der in gewisser Weise in einer Verbindung zu William steht. Als fast fröhliches\, durch die Gewinne beflügeltes Trio setzen sie ihre Reise durch die Casinos fort. \nDer Film saugt einen trotz seines ruhigen Erzählstils in die Geschichte und vor allem die Vergangenheit von William ein. In addition to her business struggeling at the moment\, Evelyn has to face a multitude of other worries and problems: the salon is being investigated by the IRS\, her husband wants a divorce\, her father\, who has recently arrived from Hong Kong\, has problems with American culture\, the Chinese New Year celebration has to be planned and prepared\, and her daughter wants to introduce her girlfriend Becky to the family. During the visit to the IRS\, Alpha Waymond\, an alternate version of Waymond from another universe\, suddenly takes over the body of Evelyn’s husband. The latter explains to her that she must use the „verse-jumping“ technology developed in\nthe so-called Alphaverse to save the multiverse from the evil Jobu Tupaki by harnessing the abilities of all her versions from other universes. EEAAO tells a story of the problems of everyday life and how people face them. Hampton’s agenda includes forming alliances with rival gangs and militia groups and supporting the community through “Free Breakfast for Children”. Until now\, O’Neal was sure he could manipulate both sides. But Hampton continues to ascend the ranks and falls in love with a fellow militant\, leaving O’Neal more and more caught between two chairs.\nThis film is an incredibly gripping masterpiece. Daniel Kaluuya as Fred Hampton is simply stunning\, his charisma is captured perfectly\, which is not only evident in a scene where he gives a rousing speech from a standing start. Normally\, the 23-year-old Canadian climbs all alone and secluded from the limelight of the climbing world\, although he achieves fascinating feats like the solo ascent of Torre Egger in Patagonia\, Argentina. He has no mobile phone or car\, lives like a nomad in remote alpine forests or sleepy villages near his climbing spots. In addition to Marc-André himself\, his girlfriend Brette and well-known mountaineers and climbers such as Reinhold Messner or Alex Honnold have their say and draw a large overall picture of the sport of mountaineering and free soloing as well as of Marc-André as a person and part of an art form practiced by many people in very different ways.\nThe film captures nature and its breathtaking grandeur fantastically. With these grandiose images and a protagonist who is somewhat opaque\, yet endearing in his way\, this documentary captivates the viewer. DESCRIPTION:Richard Williams‘ daughters are growing up in Compton\, California. Their days consist of schoolwork and a lot of training from their father\, who has a plan for them. According to a precise schedule\, he wants to lead Venus and Serena to the top of the tennis world. Of course\, this path is not entirely smooth\, and his unconventional views and training methods cause a stir in the professional tennis world. The relationship between the two girls and their father was never an easy one either\, as can be seen repeatedly throughout the film and their coming of age. \n„King Richard“ shows how a good plan can work out perfectly\, that it still takes a lot of willpower and stamina to reach the top of the sport and how important role models can be to believe in oneself.
