In the 1960s, Eileen Dunlop (Thomasin McKenzie) is working at a juvenile detention facility in Massachusetts. Her life consists of a depressing job and an abusive widowed father. Eileen often finds herself daydreaming, about killing herself, killing her father or the guards at the prison. But her life is about to change when the new prison psychologist Rebecca Saint John (Anne Hathaway) is joining the prison staff. Eileen is immediately attracted to her. The two start working a case on a particular inmate together off-duty and that’s where things start to get complicated.
Based on the award-winning novel “Eileen” (2015) by Ottessa Moshfegh, the screenplay was written by the original author herself. The psychological thriller shot during the Covid-19 pandemic is a dark coming-of-age story with major twists and an LGBTQ-element. “Eileen” was nominated for three Independent Spirit Awards. If you fancy a mix of “Carol” (2015) and “Reservoir Dogs” (1992), this movie will be just for you.
