„A Different Man“ tells the story of Edward (Sebastian Stan), a shy, isolated actor who suffers from neurofibromatosis and withdraws further and further from the world due to his disfigured facial features. A risky treatment radically changes his appearance and he begins a new life as the self-confident estate agent „Guy“. However, when he meets his former neighbour Ingrid (Renate Reinsve) again and is confronted with his old identity in a theatre project, it becomes clear that a new face does not automatically mean a new self.
„A Different Man“ is an acerbic, grotesque comedy with a slight body horror flavour. Aaron Schimberg cleverly plays with themes such as self-perception, superficiality and social ideals of beauty. The first half of the film is particularly strong, with absurd humour and melancholy moments. The acting ensemble – above all Sebastian Stan and Adam Pearson – is also convincing across the board. The magnificent make-up work makes for intense visual moments. Only the finale lays the message on a little too thick, but without detracting from the film’s overall impact. An intelligent, uncomfortably funny commentary on our obsession with appearances. (LK)
